Biomedical scientists are at the heart of multi-disciplinary teams in healthcare. They have played a key role in the development of coronavirus vaccines and provide other professionals with vital scientific information. Among other things, this allows them to make informed clinical decisions, ensure blood stocks are adequate at critical times, match blood to patients, measure chemicals to monitor patient condition, investigate disease by looking at tumour samples and identify micro-organisms in the fight against infection. This new course provides a contemporary approach to teaching and learning in the key biomedical science areas of human anatomy, physiology, cellular and molecular pathology, microbiology, immunology, haematology, as well as biochemistry, nutrition, metabolism and pharmacology. You will gain experience of working safely in a laboratory and be equipped with the skills required to plan and conduct experiments, and analyse and evaluate data. In addition, you will learn how to read and interpret scientific literature, gaining analytical and problem-solving skills. And you will learn how to think critically, working independently and as part of a team. This degree is taught alongside our nursing, dietetics, physiotherapy and occupational therapy degrees, providing opportunities for interprofessional learning and practice. Guest lecturers, who are practising biomedical scientists and clinicians, help put your learning into context and provide networking opportunities. Local links with Winchester Hospital provide further opportunities for research and collaboration. In Year 1, you study Human Anatomy and Physiology, Cell Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology, Immunology, and Scientific Skills for Biomedical Scientists. In Year 2, you build on the foundations laid in your first year by studying Research Skills, Cellular Pathology, Clinical Biochemistry, Clinical Immunology, Haematology, Transfusion Science, Clinical Genetics, and Medical Microbiology. In your final year, you undertake an Independent Project and study modules in Cellular Pathology, Clinical Biochemistry, Clinical Immunology, Haematology, Pathobiology, and Professional Skills. There is a range of optional modules which may include: Nutrition in Sport and Exercise, Social and Ethical Aspects of Science and Medicine, Human Parasitology, Bioinformatics, Advanced Immunology, and Current Trends in Biomedical Sciences. This is a versatile degree that gives you an excellent basis for a future career in the field. Graduates can be employed as the following: analytical chemist, biomedical scientist, biotechnologist, clinical scientist in biochemistry, genomics, haematology or immunology, forensic scientist, medicinal chemist, microbiologist, physician associate, research scientist (medical) and toxicologist Careers Graduates may also go on to study at Master’s level and enter research careers or the medical profession. Employers include the Health and Safety Executive, the Medical Research Council, the NHS, research universities and Public Health England.

Applicants are required to hold a minimum of 2 x A-level or equivalent qualifications (e.g. 2 x BTEC National Subsidiary Diplomas) and we accept all A-level subjects, including Critical Thinking, General Studies and own-language A-levels. We welcome applicants who have completed the Extended Project (EP/EPQ) and points obtained from this qualification will be included in any offer. In addition, we accept a maximum of 32 points from level 3 qualifications below A2 that are included in the tariff (e.g. AS-levels not studied at A-level, music or dance qualifications). If you are a mature student, your application will be considered on its individual merits and work or other professional experience may be taken into consideration in lieu of other published requirements.
