Do you have a passion for computer games? Do you want to gain the skills and knowledge needed to become an apps and games development professional? Our Computer Science with Games Development degree offers you the opportunity to develop a unique blend of technical and transferable skills that will allow you to access the variety of careers within this growing industry. You’ll study the core aspects of computer science, with a focus on coding and development of creative software including game development, Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). This four-year course includes an initial full-time Foundation Year and offers an alternative route into university and gaining a degree. This route is for you if you do not have the necessary qualifications or don’t yet feel ready to begin degree-level study, or are returning to education and would like some support to get up to speed with learning in a university setting. The Foundation Year in Computing will allow you to develop your academic skills and confidence as well as introduce you to key concepts, debates and skills that will support and inform your subsequent years of undergraduate study. Following successful completion of your Foundation Year, you’ll progress onto Year 1 of our Computer Science with Games Development BSc (Hons) degree.

Modules

Academic Skills and Studying with Confidence This module is designed to build confidence and focuses upon developing learners’ skills and abilities to successfully pursue their higher education. The module will explore several employability and professional skills such as essay writing, use of library and electronic resources, time planning, note taking, stress management, building a bibliography, and avoiding plagiarism. Students will be further trained in how to communicate, present and be a valuable team player in group settings. Project This module is designed to introduce students to project work. By conducting an individual project on an approved topic of your choice, you will gradually develop, not only knowledge and understanding of a topic which you find interesting, but you will also develop important key academic skills. You will be working under supervision of a lecturer; who will guide you through the steps to develop your confidence in identifying reliable sources of information, researching a topic and planning your project. Principles of Coding The module is designed to equip you with the conceptual, technical and development skills required to build applications using the python programming language. The module will introduce you to the key theoretical concepts of the software development lifecycle, analytical thinking design and problem-solving. You will learn how to install, configure and use Integrated Development Environment (IDE), both stand-alone and web-based versions. Principles of Web Development This module is designed to give you the opportunity of building your skills and technical competence in web design and development. You will learn several web development technologies like Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), Cascading Style Sheet (CSS), JavaScript, and other open-source software tools. You will build your skills and competence in content integration, sectioning, wireframes, schema, design guidelines, website testing and verification and finally web hosting

All the books and e-books are available from our Library to borrow but you may choose to purchase your own. On some courses there may be additional costs, such as field trips, equipment, accreditations, that may be part-funded by the University. More details will be provided at the start of the course. You'll need to include placement/s travel and associated costs too, however the University will contribute a standard amount towards your total expenditure. The University provides students with a £6 printing credit each academic year which can be topped up either on campus or online.
