University of Manchester has opted into the TEF and received a Silver award.
This joint honours course combines the study of ancient, medieval and modern history. Half of the course engages with the history and culture of the Greco-Roman civilisations of the Mediterranean and its hinterland; the other half explores medieval and contemporary history, stretching from Late Antiquity to modern day histories of globalisation. Students will engage with, and approach analytically, (a) the history and culture of the Greco-Roman civilisations of the Mediterranean and its hinterland (b) medieval, early modern, and contemporary history, stretching from Late Antiquity to modern day histories of globalisation. As well as offering students breadth of perspective, training is offered on a large variety of historiographical techniques, including specialisms which are vital tools of historical research. Students will be equipped to move into a wide range of careers or further study options. We aim to:
- Develop, consolidate and foster the capacity to communicate and present ideas orally and in writing
- Introduce students to the methods of scholarly presentation
- Harness our high-quality learning resources to provide and support stimulating course-units appropriate to our programmes
- Use the expertise of our staff to provide research-led teaching; promote a close and fruitful two-way relationship between teaching and research
- Monitor, review, update and enhance our provision regularly to ensure that it meets appropriate academic standards
- Offer a supportive environment, with effective pastoral and academic support, to foster the learning/personal development of our students
- Produce graduates with the set of transferable cognitive skills of self-management and independence that equip them either for employment or for further study/research, whether in history, classics, ancient history or in other fields
- Provide a supportive environment for all students, free of bias or discrimination
- Produce graduates well trained in the study of classical antiquity through a balanced, coherent programme combining breadth with detailed attention to a range of aspects of classical civilization
- Foster critical awareness in the reading/interpretation of ancient texts, literary and (especially) historical material
- Offer the option of a progressive language course in Latin or Greek language, usually at post A-level (or equivalent) standard, consolidating existing knowledge and developing reading knowledge in particular, but also other language-based and language-related skills. NB with special permission, students may take Intensive language course units.
- Stimulate critical study of the past; develop and extend students' powers of critical/analytical thought and logical argument by applying them to historical interpretation of both primary and secondary sources.
- Advance the ability of students to work independently and to organise effectively their own schedules of personal study.
- Provide a broadly based, challenging curriculum, based upon the study of diverse historical periods and cultures.
- Develop appreciation of a variety of theoretical approaches/methodologies with reference to particular historical courses and periods.

|Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016)||DDD||We require at DDD, plus one A-level at Grade A in either Ancient History or History.|
|Access to HE Diploma||D: 39 credits M: 6 credits||We require a QAA-recognised Access to HE Diploma (a minimum of 60 credits overall with at least 45 at Level 3), with merit or distinction in a subject area relevant to the chosen course. The specific course requirements are either GCSEs in both English and Mathematics (at Grade B/6 or higher), or achievement at Level 2 (GCSE-equivalent) by, for example, having six credits each in English and Maths. We also consider other factors such as additional educational achievements, life experience and skills on an individual basis. We also require a minimum of 39 credits with a Distinction grade, plus 6 credits with a Merit grade, all in a Humanities-related subject. 15 of the Distinction credits should be in the pre-requisite subject required for A-levels. You will be required to produce a piece of written work, for assessment by the admissions tutor. Once you have applied, the admissions administrator will contact you with a list of topics/questions. You will be asked to choose one and produce a piece (1,500 words) on that subject, for submission by the deadline given by the administrator.|

|Extended Project||The University recognises the benefits of the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and the opportunities it provides for applicants to develop independent study and research skills. We may also choose to take your performance in the EPQ into account, should places be available in August for applicants who narrowly miss the entry grades for their chosen course. GCSE English Language Grade B. This level is often referred to as the 'B2 level'. Additionally, our individual Schools may ask for specific English Language proficiency levels that are necessary for their academic programmes.
