Learn to forecast trends, interpret consumer behaviour, appreciate the importance of sustainability and build an understanding of the current global fashion market. Our curriculum revolves around industry guest talks and manufacturing site visits, giving students a real understanding of the different roles and networks available to them. The course units have been crafted to give students the confidence to put theory taught in class into practice during group projects, individual work placements, industry briefs and business proposals. Using the Adobe suite and online fashion resources, students will develop the creative and practical skills to enable them to plan a range, promote a brand, generate a professional report, pitch an idea and ultimately understand the business of fashion. This course has been designed to provide students with the mindset and skills needed to succeed in industry. This exciting course encourages creative flair, an eye for trends, business acumen and management skills. The course places a strong emphasis on gaining practical work experience and enterprise. Students will gain practical knowledge about the product development process, including fabric selection and testing, colour management, quality management and sustainability. They will learn about predicting the trend, planning the range, building the brand and then how to protect and promote it. The course aims to develop creative skills as well as problem-solving, organisational, planning, promotional and management skills. CAD lessons will facilitate creative presentation while other CAD/CAM management tools will also help to prepare students for industry. Students will study through a mix of practice and theory-based learning and will benefit from the opportunity to collaborate with students from other disciplines as well as top brands. Year 1: Students will build fundamental skills in fashion forecasting, buying from concept to consumer, brand buying, management and promotion. They will be taught digital communication skills to communicate brand identity and will be encouraged to think about their personal brand signature. We encourage students to start thinking about their contextual studies research throughout this year. Year 2: Students will gain a greater understanding of managing their personal brand and will work in creative collaboration with industry partners and students from other disciplines. Merchandising and visual merchandising are taught in the context of real industry practice. Every student will be given the opportunity to undertake a work placement and participate in manufacturing visits to echo the fashion buyer’s role. Year 3: We ask students to show their contextual studies research in a written or visual dissertation. They will further build on their skills in consumer research and trend prediction to make the case for a gap in the market to launch a new brand. They will also write a market research report, create a brand proposal, range plan, tech packs and produce a range of creative outcomes.
Students will be continually assessed through written and project work, and in the final year assessment is through dissertation and portfolio.
