Course summary

Become highly proficient in German, Portuguese and Chinese on this 4-year Modern Languages degree. You'll develop a strong understanding of the cultures and societies you study by spending a year abroad. Knowing a range of languages opens up many opportunities in today's globally interconnected economy. This is our broadest range of languages offered, and will prepare you to communicate and work in a range of diverse and multilingual contexts. By joining our community of language learners, you will take advantage of our ambitious language teaching that will give you the tools to become the best linguist you possibly can. This course complements your language learning with modules on history and contemporary society, literature and film, ethnography and anthropology and linguistic studies. Flexible module options allow you to balance your choice of modules according to your own interests. Our Digital Humanities facilities will allow you to study and research through cutting edge technology. Supported by an expert team, these technologies will enable you to start making and exploring in new and immersive ways.


You will study a variety of topics that cover the fundamental aspects of German, Portuguese and Chinese, and you will have the opportunity to tailor your course to your interests by choosing some of your modules. Assessment method

On this course you will learn through a range of activities that may include lectures, classes and tutorials, coursework, presentations, individual and group projects, consultations, and independent learning (studying on your own). You will be able to demonstrate what you have learnt through a variety of assessment methods, such as written examinations, essays, reports, portfolios, performance, presentations and projects. You’ll be supported by a personal academic tutor who will offer support and advice throughout your studies. You will also receive feedback throughout your course, enabling you to identify areas for improvement before your work is formally assessed.

Qualification requirements

We welcome applicants with other qualifications eg. European Baccalaureate. You will be expected to attain an A level equivalent standard. The University of Southampton requires all applicants to achieve at least a Grade 4 in English and Mathematics GCSEs (taken in England) or a Grade C in both subjects (where taken in Northern Ireland or Wales). Some degree subjects stipulate specific additional GCSE minimum grades, which will be specified as part of the individual degree programme entry requirements.
