Course summary
Our Foundation degree in Applied Sports Coaching and PE is an ideal first step into a career working in the fitness and leisure sector as a sports coach or specialist. The programme is designed to prepare you for future study or employment within the coaching and physical education sector, combining up-to-date theory with innovative practice and vocational experience. It will take you on a two-year journey, from discovering and exploring your own personal learning philosophy, to learning how to apply your theoretical understanding to a range of practical settings including schools, professional teams and recognised athletic institutions. Important strands in the programme include understanding human anatomy, sport and exercise psychology; and how to teach physical education, including the entire coaching cycle, from curriculum design and planning to delivering and reflecting on your practice. You will have opportunities throughout the programme to develop your professional practice in applied coaching contexts. You’ll learn key academic skills such as essay writing, presentation skills, critical thinking, independent study and researching. You will record your progress in a portfolio documenting your professional development, including reflective practice, communities of practice and the development of your professional knowledge and expertise. You will be offered learning experiences that are both varied and challenging, encouraging you to develop problem-solving skills and innovative approaches. Another strength of the programme is the range of work-related learning you will experience, both in college and university facilities and within Bristol Academy of Sport, as well as external work and industry-related contexts such as Future Stars Coaching and local education and fitness providers. You will experience a range of working environments integrated into your study programme, which will enable you to work independently with individuals and groups. This Foundation degree will give you future career opportunities in sports coaching, teaching, sports development, and related fields. If you decide you want to go on to a full Bachelor’s degree, you can “top up” to our level 6 BSc (Hons) Applied Sports Conditioning and Exercise.
