Course summary
This course is a stepping-stone towards a full honour’s degree in Computing. The course is a Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ) which is designed to align with several of the digital Occupational Standards (OS) as defined by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE). The course incorporates vendor-accredited certification (where appropriate) and can provide professional status and progression to direct employment. It is delivered at The University Centre where the first two years of study lead to the award of HND after which you could top-up to an undergraduate degree. The purpose of the course is to develop students as professional, self-reflecting individuals able to meet the demands of employers in the computing sector and adapt to a constantly changing world. The course will equip you with computing skills, knowledge and the understanding, necessary to achieve high performance in the modern global computing environment. You will develop skills in programming, computer hardware and networking systems, relational database design, computer and network security, information systems and website design and development. Modules on this HND have been very carefully designed to provide a fully integrated course of study. Key skills in English and Mathematics, business skills including report writing, group work, planning projects and making presentations are fully contextualised within the academic subject content. This course is suitable for those who would like to progress from a Level 3 qualification in Computing or ICT or those already working in the industry who would like to build their understanding of key concepts in computing. It will also provide flexibility, knowledge, skills and motivation as a basis for future studies and career progression in computing and systems development.

Modules
HND: Qualification credit value: a minimum of 240 credits. This is made up of 120 credits in each year. Assessment method
Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals are assessed using a combination of: • Pearson-set assignments, which are set by centres in line with Pearson’s guidelines and graded by centres. • Centre-developed internal assignments that are set and assessed by centres. Assessment in each module is designed to meet its specified learning outcomes. Methods of assessment will include time constrained phase tests, portfolios of work, laboratory exercises, exams, reports and formal presentations.
Qualified teacher status (QTS)
To work as a teacher at a state school in England or Wales, you will need to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS). This is offered on this course for the following level:
