The HNC in Performing Arts (Musical Theatre) is a vocational course which explores contemporary and current practice whilst still acknowledging the traditional methods and practices of Musical Theatre. The course provides training in musical theatre alongside a focus on contextual studies and industry knowledge. Students on performing arts courses work together as a Production Company; across all levels and all disciplines. Therefore, students will be treated as a professional ensemble theatre company, learning and developing skills in creative collaboration, leadership, research and the formation and implementation of creative concepts. The programme develops an inherent understanding about the contemporary Performing Arts industry, with relevant and current information about the demands of how to develop as a proactive, ‘thinking’ creative artist. The course aims to create a deep understanding of the relationship between the actor, director, scriptwriter/deviser and the performance environment, by developing the student’s ability to respond creatively to the needs of theatrical performance. Students are equipped with the skills necessary to translate a director’s vision through the development, look and practical requirements of on-stage characters and performers, thereby providing back-story and insight into character. The units deliver a theoretical, historical and cultural basis for the concepts explored, arming graduates with a fundamental basis and background of a wide range of theatrical and artistic forms. This also enables students to develop research, analysis and critical skills through academic writing and demands of research.
Units covered at level 4 include: • The Performing Arts Industry and Professional Development • Acting • Jazz Dance • Devising • Musical Theatre History in Practice/Singing • Investigation of Specialism.
The programme is assessed mainly through practical performance and assessment; continuous assessment across rehearsal and development and evaluative interviews to assess personal development and contribution. The submission of written essays, evaluations, logbooks and presentations is also a part of the HNC; learning research, academic skill and writing skill to ensure that students are equipped for higher level learning. Students will gain formative feedback verbally for both written work and practical assessment. Peer and self-assessment is an essential element of personal development which enhances the learning experience and allows space for personal evaluation.
