Why study this course? This course will equip you with the essential skills and knowledge for a successful career in the film and television industry by exploring and developing a diverse range of skills in Pre-Production, Production and Post-Production. You will complete workshops and practical assignments delivered by industry experienced tutors focussing on key areas of screenwriting, cinematography, editing, sound design, motion graphics, lighting and broadcast resulting in the creation of a digital portfolio of work to enhance future employability and engagement with industry professionals and organisations. About the course With our BTEC Higher Nationals in Film and Television we aim to develop students into professional, self-reflective individuals who can meet the demands of employers in the film and television industry and adapt to a constantly evolving world. Through industry linked projects our students will be provided with the core skills required for a range of careers in the TV & Film industry utilising our extensive range of professional equipment, broadcast studio and software. Students will work in both group and individual projects creating a range of TV and Film productions such as documentaries, fictional films, music videos and promotional content for both broadcast and streaming platforms. The course aims to help students to develop industry connections through a strong programme of masterclasses, workshops and industry visits. The teaching team all work within the media industry in Northern Ireland and can offer advice and support to those seeking employment or further study in the field of creative media production. Students will begin by completing a range of practical workshops covering camera, lighting, sound, directing, scriptwriting, editing and VFX before moving into industry structured projects for fictional and factual filmmaking. Students will explore the various production roles whilst developing their skillset which will provide a foundation to progress into their second unit and the opportunity to build upon their creative, technical and contextual knowledge and skill to begin applying them to more complex and professionally oriented outcomes. The programme provides students with a solid theoretical background to television and film production as well as experience working with professional equipment on live projects. Successful completion of the HNC Film and television course may provide you with the opportunity to complete a further year leading to the Level 5 HND in Film and Television. Degree related pathways- Students that successfully complete the HNC and HND programmes can progress to one of the following areas: • BA (Hons) Film and Television • BA (Hons) Film Studies • BA (Hons) Film and Media • BA (Hons) Film and Television Practice • BA (Hons) Film Practice Employment - Recent graduates of the HNC course have progressed onto production trainee schemes with Northern Ireland Screen, permanent positions with some of NI's independent production companies as well as freelancing as crew members on a range of Film/Television/Commercial productions. Roles may include, but are not limited to: • Editor (Assistant Edit) • Camera Operator • Data Wrangler Director (Assistant Director) • Foley Producer, • Director of Photography • Lighting/ Camera crew
Modules
Level 4 Modules: A1 Concept and Development- This unit is designed to enable the practice and development of underpinning knowledge, understanding and proficiency of creative practice through exploration of the subject area. A2 Creative Project - This unit is designed to give students the opportunity to consolidate and apply their learning through the production of a portfolio of work related to project outcomes.
Assessment method
Students are assessed using a range of different methods. You will be have both formative and summative assessments throughout the programme These may include coursework, Project Based Learning, presentations, practical activities, role-play, products and case studies. This is dependent on the requirements of each unit of study. Oral, written and online feedback will be provided during your course to help improve and monitor performance.
Qualified teacher status (QTS)
