The DPhil in History is an advanced research degree, awarded on the basis of successful completion of an individual research thesis and an oral examination. This course is participating in a pilot initiative in partnership with Rare Recruitment, who are leaders in diversity graduate recruitment. This pilot is part of the ‘Close the Gap’ project which aims to develop and test new disciplinary-specific, race-literate and fair selection processes that are designed to bring about meaningful change in doctoral candidate selection. The DPhil in History offers the opportunity to carry out research on one of the following subject areas:

- Early Modern History 1500-1700
- British and European History 1700-1850
- British History, 1850 onwards
- European History, 1850 onwards
- US History
- Global and Imperial History
- Military History
- Late Antique and Byzantine Studies
- South Asian History
