Course summary

The MSc Clinical Exercise Physiology has been developed to provide focused learning for those that have an interest in delivering evidence-based practice for those living with long-term health conditions. You will discover the approaches needed to study adaptations to exercise and understand physiologic functional capacity in healthy individuals, as well as those who suffer from chronic disease and disability. Transferable, graduate-level professional knowledge and skills will be developed throughout the course to best prepare students for sustainable careers in clinical exercise physiology and wider health, sport, and performance-related settings. The course allows you to complete the education requirements needed to register to become a Clinical Exercise Physiologist with the Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists. The MSc in Clinical Exercise Physiology comprises four 30-credit modules, and one 60-credit module, aligned with the Clinical Exercise Physiology UK curriculum. Our focus on cross-cutting clinical skills and simulation ensures a range of modules to provide students with real-life clinical experience. Reflecting the clinical skills and simulation theme, modules are assessed using authentic continuous assessment, which requires the demonstration of knowledge and skills that are relevant to the practice of clinical exercise physiology. Examples include workplace-based assessments and supervisor reports, practical exams, written reports, and oral communication. The MSc is part of Lancaster Medical School (LMS) and is delivered by the Sport and Exercise Science team who also offer an internationally regarded BSc Sports and Exercise Science - one of the first in the UK to be delivered by a medical school. You’ll therefore work with academics who are established experts in the field. LMS is recognised for its subject expertise, supportive community, and satisfied students. As such, the MSc in Clinical Exercise Physiology is firmly grounded in current medical scientific knowledge and practice, while still providing opportunities to develop a range of transferable understanding, skills, and competencies. You will also develop intellectual and academic curiosity and we enable successful life-long learning which is aligned with the requirements of relevant regulators including Clinical Exercise Physiology UK.
