From modelling disease evolution, to better understanding climate change, and to optimising business models – there are many data-driven challenges in society. On this course, you’ll study the fundamentals of modern physics and develop the skills needed to tackle these issues. You’ll be part of a close community – our lively Physics Society arranges regular social events. Our building is a real hub of activity. You’ll have all your practical sessions in our modern teaching laboratories. Outside the classroom, you can study or catch up with your friends in our popular student spaces. You’ll interact with expert physicists and data scientists throughout your studies. All your teaching is underpinned by the latest cutting-edge research. During you integrated Masters year, you’ll develop your understanding of advanced topics in physics and data science. You’ll have the opportunity to choose what interests you most from a wide range of options. You’ll work closely with a departmental research group – journeying to the wild frontiers of scientific understanding in applied data science. Our faculty:
- develop next-generation quantum technology devices and materials including quantum sensors and quantum computers
- work on the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, as well as on the latest neutrino experiments
- unravel the mysteries of our universe – the nature of dark matter, quantum gravity and quantum effects in black holes
- work at the forefront of astrophysics, from exploring dark energy, to observing the origins and evolution of our universe with the largest available telescopes and gravitational waves.
