Course summary

Our Higher National Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment (Civil Engineering) provides a grounding in key concepts and practical skills alongside the development of the knowledge and understanding required by employers and professional bodies. The programme is designed to enable you to study core modules and appropriate specialist modules for disciplines in the Construction and the Built Environment sector including: Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Building Surveying and Architectural Design. The qualification provides a thorough grounding in key concepts and practical skills to allow direct progression to employment in a construction profession. The course is suitable if you have ambitions of working in a professional, managerial or technical capacity as a Site Manager, Surveyor, Designer or other technical roles within construction companies, as well as offering the opportunity to progress on to the second year or third year of a degree programme. In addition, the HND will provide a progression route to the professional qualifications offered by Chartered Institute Of Building, Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors.

Modules

Further information will be uploaded to the College website as soon as possible but the HND Construction and The Built Environment programmes will comprise units including: Construction Technology; Science and Materials; Construction Practice and Management; Group Project.

Assessment method

In addition to lectures, seminars, tutorial sessions and directed study work form the basis of your learning programme .The emphasis is on developing your ability to understand the demands of working as a professional. This is achieved through a student focused approach to develop both your vocational knowledge and understanding and to encourage your development of critical and evaluative skills. Assessments may include elements of: practical assessments; portfolios of evidence; data analysis; case studies; oral and written reports; presentations; assignments.
