Course details

This course is delivered in the Creative Studios at our Queen Alexandra Campus. The course is skills based and validated by Pearson, Edexcel, embracing a broad range of Fine Art activities. It focuses on a broad range of fine art practice and you will learn a number of skills that are required to work in the art and design industry. Academic staff are practicing artists with national and international profiles. Their knowledge and experience are utilised to teach and demonstrate a number of specialisms including life drawing and sculpture. Units are devised to enable the development of appropriate skills, nurturing an underpinning framework for diverse approaches, which are process-led. These include experimental methods of drawing, painting, sculpture and digital media. During each year of their students will be given the opportunity to exhibit work, including temporary public art – works in place for 1 year in regional venues, providing an excellent platform for their creativity, which can be listed on students’ CVs. In addition to both private and public commissions, artists find work in many industries, including artists residencies, selling work through commercial galleries, teaching, leading art groups in hospitals, running community arts programmes, illustration and working for galleries and museums. Some of the sessions are taught through demonstration (e.g. life drawing) as well as individual discussion/guidance. Modules •Professional Development/Practice •Individual Project (Pearson Set) •Media Practices •Material Practices •Art/Craft Production •Principles of Life Drawing •Applied Practice-Collaborative Project •Advanced Art Practice Studies •Conceptual Practice •Material Selection & Specification •Professional Modelmaking Weekly Art History sessions are also delivered, encouraging you to evaluate your practice from a historical context. These opportunities are unpaid, but great for your CV, helping to boost your employability in relation to paid commission opportunities for qualified artists after you graduate

Assessment method

Assessment is through assignments and work submitted, which is assessed at the end of each semester, with an external examiner visit at the end of the academic year.
