Course summary

This 36 week, Postgraduate Certificate in Early Years Teaching is an independent distance learning course for international educational practitioners who work with children aged five and under. If you want to develop a specialism or further enhance your professionalism in teaching, then this course is for you. This course is aimed at professionals/practitioners who will engage in an intensive one year blended learning programme to acquire knowledge, understanding and skills with regards to working with children and families in the international early years context. Our course is unique and distinctive in that it offers a highly flexible mode of learning with course delivery and assessment entirely via independent distance learning using our university Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) without ever having to come to the UK. The course materials and teaching practices on this course not only provides opportunities to develop specialist knowledge and professional practice in early years curriculum and pedagogy, but also opportunities to development important leadership skills which can help enhance career progression. To note: Graduates from this course can apply for direct entry to stage 2 of the 3 stage MA Education or MA International Education courses.

Modules

Modules include; Teaching the Early Years Teaching Practice 1 (20 credits) Teaching the Early Years Teaching Practice 2 (20 credits) Observing, Assessing and Reporting Young Children’s Learning and Development (20 credits) Constructing a Curriculum for the Early Years (30 credits) (Masters Level 7) Leading, Planning and Managing Provision for Development and Learning in the Early Years (30 credits) (Masters Level 7)

Assessment method

You can learn from anywhere in the world that has internet access, as learning materials will be e-books, online journal papers and other online resources. There will be online discussion forums where you can debate current issues relevant to the module content. All academic assignments are marked online (with online feedback). Teaching practices are monitored continuously by your PAT (personal academic tutor) and you will upload documentation and evidence weekly for feedback. Your progress will be assessed with written assignments, and observed teaching.

Qualified teacher status (QTS)

To work as a teacher at a state school in England or Wales, you will need to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS). This is offered on this course for the following level:

English language requirements

If English is not your first language you need to send proof of IELTS level 6.5 or equivalent. Applicants whose first language is not English must achieve a minimum IELTS band score of 6.5, with 6.5 in writing, and no less than 6 in Reading and Speaking and Listening.
