Sociology and Politics (Professional Placement Year)

Course summary

Are you socially engaged, media conscious, inventive, and fascinated by how the world works? Have you wondered who has the power, how they got it, and what they do with it? Are you interested in new forms of political protest and engagement, from awareness-raising hashtags to demonstrations on the streets? From workers’ rights and smashing the patriarchy, to environmental activism and calls for sustainability? This course positions politics in its sociological contexts, to enable you to explore the emergence of popular movements, feminism and gender politics, political radicalism and reaction, and established forms of political participation and governance. Combined Honour Awards At Bath Spa University many of our undergraduate programmes can be combined, so you don’t have to limit yourself to one subject. If you choose to study a combined award then in Year One you’ll start by studying both subjects in equal depth. From Year Two you can choose whether to continue with equal numbers of modules from each subject, or whether you want to select additional modules in one or the other. Upon successful completion of the programme you will graduate with a joint degree. More about the Professional Placement Year A Professional Placement Year (PPY), traditionally known as a sandwich year, is where you undertake a period of work with an external organisation for between 9-13 months. The placement occurs between your second and final years of undergraduate study. You can engage in multiple placements to make up the total time and are required to source the placement(s) yourself, with support from the Careers team. The PPY Bursary can make work experience more accessible, with students undertaking a PPY able to receive between £500 and £1,500 to be used towards placement costs such as travel, food, workwear or accommodation.

Assessment method

We use a range of assessments to gain a comprehensive measure of your performance. Examples may include coursework, practical assignments, projects, and possibly some exams, depending on your choice of modules. You’ll participate in a variety of activities including lectures, seminars, workshops, practical sessions, masterclasses, and field trips.
