Course summary

Pursue your research interests in environmental and/or urban design. Environmental design strives to reconcile conflicting requirements of; climate, building function, user expectations and energy related carbon emissions. This provides a wide scope of opportunities for candidates, in areas such as:

  • Natural ventilation
  • Passive heating and cooling
  • Solar protection
  • Fabric thermal storage
  • Daylight and solar strategies
  • Architectural acoustics
Urban design explores the city as a field of analysis and intervention. Research in this area examines the relationship between spatial and design issues, and social and economic urban processes. PhD topics may cover a variety of urban design aspects such as:
  • History and theory of urban design
  • Public realm
  • Sustainable cities
  • Urban conservation & revitalisation
  • Innovation environments and waterfront regeneration
If you produce design elements as part of this PhD, it is expected that they shall be incorporated into a written thesis. Entry requirements

2.1 (or international equivalent) and/or a Master's at merit level of above in a relevant subject. English language requirements: IELTS 6.0 (no less than 5.5 in any element).
