Course summary

Coventry University’s Aerospace degree course offers innovative curriculum and learning opportunities, strong industry links and excellent technical facilities. The Aerospace industry provides one of the most challenging environments for the development and testing of new technologies. Offering a range of exciting careers, there is a growing demand for aerospace engineers with a systems focus and who are able to embrace the multidisciplinary aspects of problem solving to help design the next generation of aircraft systems. We aim to develop a thorough, integrated understanding of mechanical, electrical and systems engineering and how this knowledge is applied in the aerospace industry. This course, which has been well established for over 20 years, is taught with a focus on developing problem solving skills particularly in the area of design and optimisation. You will have the opportunity to learn to apply your knowledge using industry standard tools and practices. You can also gain experience of the industry first-hand through our exciting industry-focused fieldtrips, which have previously included the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and NASA Goddard Space Flight Centre in the US and Airbus (Toulouse), Airbus (Marseille) and Finmeccanica in Europe (application and additional costs may apply). The School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Automotive Engineering enjoys an excellent reputation for teaching, outstanding student experience and exciting research. We work closely with the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) and our strong industry links, with companies such as Emirates, Jaguar Land Rover, GE Aviation, Meggitt, UTC Aerospace Systems, Airbus, Rolls Royce, Unipart and Birmingham International Airport, can lead to placement opportunities and collaborative projects. You will be taught by staff with industrial experience, having worked for Bombardier, Rolls Royce, BAE Systems, Marston Aerospace and the Ministry of Defence. Their research expertise ranges from aerodynamics, flight dynamics, aircraft structural analysis, crashworthiness modelling and avionics to human factors in aviation; it is utilised both within the research informed teaching on the course and in the final year project. The combined theoretical and practical focus of the programme concentrates on engineering mathematics, mechanical, electrical and thermodynamic design, system simulation and modelling, control systems, aerodynamics, aircraft structures and manufacturing; all of which give our graduates a strong base from which to start professional work in aerospace design using the latest software tools. Previous students have obtained jobs as design engineers working on the latest projects in the aerospace industry. Key Course Benefits

  • Accreditation by Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) to Chartered Engineer (partial accreditation to CEng, but full accreditation to IEng).
  • Expert guest lectures, which previously have covered topics such as green landing systems, airship developments, aircraft design and training, and non-destructive testing in aircraft braking systems.
  • On and off site access to commercial engineering software, including 3D CAD, Finite Element Analysis, Computational Fluid Dynamics and Multibody Systems for design and simulation, as well as training in industry standard Catia, HyperWorks, STAR-CCM+, SIMPACK and Matlab/Simulink software.
  • Our excellent facilities include a full-size Harrier Jet (used for teaching), 3 full scale flight simulators, wind tunnel, composites lab, metrology lab, environmental test lab, flow lab, AVL engine test cell, automotive workshop, fatigue and tensile testing (Instron), civil engineering specialist testing equipment, a range of CNC machinery and a laser workshop.

Course details

Our main study themes are:

  • Aerodynamics and aircraft systems: A broad introduction to each of the main aeronautical engineering disciplines. Covering the essentials of aerodynamics, aircraft systems and powerplants, you will develop the skills to plan, perform, record, analyse and evaluate experimentation within an aerospace environment. Legal issues of relevance to the aerospace industry are also covered.
  • Engineering mathematics: Aims to develop your competence in mathematical methods relevant to engineering. You will have the opportunity to learn to analyse problems using appropriate mathematical techniques carrying out the manipulation themselves and also using modern mathematical software.
  • Avionic systems: Presents the concepts of signal acquisition and processing required as part of the study of avionic systems. It covers radio and data communication, electromagnetic propagation, radar, navigation and digital signal processing as applied in aircraft systems.
  • Flight dynamics, control and modelling: Introduces you to control theory, the aircraft's vehicle dynamics and investigates the concepts of aircraft stability.
  • Mechanics and Thermodynamics: Aims to broaden knowledge and understanding of rigid body mechanics, stress analysis and thermofluids. You will have the chance to learn to correctly apply solid mechanics and thermofluids theory to design problems by means of practical examples.
  • Propulsion System Design: Develop detailed understanding of engine thermodynamics and the operation of engine ancillary systems such as fuel systes, heat exchangers.
  • Aircraft Design and System Verification/Validation: An opportunity to apply what you have learnt, working together as a team to design, develop and test an aircraft from first principles using the university facilities.
