Course summary

Software engineering is currently one of the most in-demand skills in the UK. This programme is based on an innovative and dynamic curriculum, designed and delivered in collaboration with a range of employers. Software is all around us from the moment you wake up with your morning alarm, use your home appliances or check your messages on your mobile. Vehicles are all controlled by software whether you drive a car or hop on a bus or train. Technology is ever evolving and is designed to make our lives easier. Businesses are more and more reliant on intelligent software to process orders, manage customer interactions, predict trends, manufacture products enhance customer experience with automated checkouts. As a software engineer you will be the one designing and developing these systems. Having the technical skills to solve problems, design, implement and maintain this software is highly desirable across all industries, not just software companies. The software engineering degree at Petroc equips you with the skills and knowledge to succeed in this area with specialist lecturing staff, high specification equipment and purpose-built university centre. The course covers the fundamental aspects of programming and software engineering as well as software development industry practices. You will be presented with new and challenging opportunities that will increase your level of expertise and technological understanding. Alongside practical programming modules, you will also gain a wider understanding of key industry concepts, such as project management, software development practices and methodologies, data analytics, management and big data, computational thinking, systems architecture and software testing. On successful completion of this course, you will have both a theoretical and a practical understanding of software engineering.

Assessment method

This programme uses a range of assessments, and where possible, assignments are based on live scenarios. All students will carry out a project during their studies and there is also the opportunity for an industrial placement.
