Course summary

Study the mechanisms of life and the underlying causes of human disease. Your three-year Biomedical Sciences degree will provide in-depth training across biomedical sciences with a strong focus on the science driving forward modern clinical practice. Biomedical science is making a difference today in a number of vital areas including investigating potential treatments for Alzheimer’s disease, finding the causes of cystic fibrosis and improving our understanding and treatment of cancer. Your learning will encompass all areas of human physiology and allow you to combine interests in biochemistry, physiology, neuroscience, cell biology, genetics, microbiology and pharmacology. You will develop your biomedical laboratory and research skills under the guidance of our world-leading staff. You can spend a semester studying at a University in Europe or Australasia. You will also have the opportunity to extend your degree by a year, to gain valuable experience from a year in employment preparing you for your chosen career. Our graduates often progress onto medicine and healthcare pathways, the clinical professions or research.


Typical modules include: Year 1: Chemistry of life, Fundamentals of Biochemistry, Fundamentals of cell biology and physiology, How to think like a scientist, The Human Genome and Disease. Year 2: Cell Biology, Flow of Genetic Information, Immunology infection and inflammation, A Global Health, Bioinformatics, Evolotuion, Pharmacology, Neuroscience, Plant Dvelopment and Function. Assessment method

The learning activities for this course include the following: lectures, classes and tutorials, coursework, individual and group projects and independent learning (studying on your own). We’ll assess you using: coursework, laboratory reports and essays, design and problem-solving exercises, individual and group projects, oral presentations and written exams.
