Screenwriting and Producing with Foundation

Course summary

The role of the writer is rapidly changing. Increasingly, they’re expected to direct teams through the entire production process. For this reason, this course offers much more than a creative writing degree. Here, you'll combine creative development with practical production skills and project management expertise – learning the commercial (fundraising, promotion, distribution) and production sides of the industry, as well as managing team expectations, controlling finances and handling legal requirements. Your first year is dedicated to gaining a general overview of the industry – developing your skills in screenwriting, storytelling, producing, editing and project management. In your second and third years, you’ll focus more specifically on the relationship between screenwriting and production – learning how to write and produce a variety of pieces, including a one-hour TV drama. Mirroring the industry, you'll work alone and in groups: with peers and tutors taking the role of script supervisors and producers, sharing ideas at regular meetings. Industry events and opportunities: Based in London, you'll also have the opportunity to attend film screenings, workshops and masterclasses – learning from established screenwriters, producers and industry leaders – and join internships to put your learning into context, building your professional network. Past students have worked with the likes of the BBC, the British Film Institute and UK Cinema Association. Regent’s also hosts the annual London Screenwriters Festival, offering opportunities to meet leading industry figures and attend over 100 events including seminars, workshops, screenings, debates and speed-pitching sessions. You’ll also have the chance to attend Robert McKee’s celebrated STORY Seminar and showcase your work at the Aesthetica Short Film Festival – an international, BAFTA-qualifying festival celebrating independent film from around the world. A helping hand from Robert McKee: In partnership with Robert McKee, one of the world's most in demand screenwriting lecturers, we're proud to offer one student on this course an International Screenwriting Scholarship – offering £7,000 towards your fees and complimentary places at Robert's STORY Seminar and at the London Screenwriters Festival. During your three years, you'll gain a critical understanding of both screenwriting and producing – from initial idea through development, production, post-production and exhibition. You'll be able to recognise the context behind all genres of narrative drama, understand the relationship between creator and audience, and develop your own perspective of global storytelling. Integrated Foundation option This integrated foundation year has been specially designed to give you the introductory knowledge and business skills needed to confidently progress to degree-level study. It's structured around discipline knowledge, with extra modules that introduce you to the transferable skills you'll need at degree level and beyond – giving you a solid grounding in both management principles and business skills. Once you've successfully completed your Foundation year, you'll be able to progress to any of our business, social sciences, humanities or media undergraduate courses. Building on this foundation, you’ll develop specialist knowledge in your chosen course.

Assessment method

Your skills and knowledge will be assessed via presentations, group work, pitches, production strategies, scripts, reflective essays, personal research and critical analyses of aspects of the film, television and theatre industries.
