OVERVIEW Providing outstanding care for people with a range of mental health conditions is a challenging but greatly rewarding career. Accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), our Nursing (Mental Health) degree course will give you the blend of essential skills, knowledge and experience to help meet high demand for workers in this field. Led by expert clinical practitioners, you will gain a deep understanding of areas including human development and managing medicine safely, as well as the technical and personal skills required for delivering high-quality compassionate care for patients in a wide range of environments. On completion of our mental health nursing course, you will be able to apply for Registered Nurse (Mental Health) status with the NMC. To support your mental health nurse training, you will gain vital experience on industry placements in a range of settings, thanks to our excellent links with the healthcare sector. You will also be able to develop your hands-on practical skills during your studies through use of our state-of-the-art simulation facilities on campus, including a simulated clinical environment and virtual reality technology. FACILITIES As a student on our mental health nursing course at University College Birmingham, you will have access to our Health Skills and Simulation Suite, featuring a purpose-built simulated clinical environment to help you practise your physical health skills and enhance your practical training. Our 360° immersive video room provides access to 200 interactive health and social care backgrounds, while we also have virtual reality software and a range of mental health-focused online case studies and scenarios, helping you grow in confidence in your mental health nursing practice. PLACEMENTS Our course features multiple placements in different environments throughout your studies, ranging in duration from four weeks to 14 weeks. Participating in care delivered over 24 hours a day and 7 days per week is an integral part of the course, so you will be expected to adopt various shift patterns. Some placements may also be some distance from your home to enable you to experience different settings. Employers we have worked with include Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Trust, Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust, Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Trust, Cygnet Healthcare, Practice Plus Group – Health in Justice, Birmingham City Council and Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council. Assessment method

Please be aware that methods of delivery for this course may be altered due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic – for the most up-to-date information, please refer to our website: www.ucb.ac.uk ASSESSMENT You will be assessed 50% in practice and simulation (minimum 2,300 hours) through completion of a Practice Assessment Document and Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) each year. The 50% theory (minimum 2,300 hours) is assessed through a variety of modes including written assignments, presentations, examinations, professional discussions and a portfolio of evidence. The course consists of three parts. You will be expected to demonstrate achievement of set competencies and outcomes at the end of each part to enable progression to the next part or to complete the course. Our teaching and assessment is underpinned by our Teaching, Learning and Assessment Strategy 2021-2024.

International applicants

All non-EU international students can apply directly via our online application forms: https://portal.ucb.ac.uk/#/admissions/direct-application/intro Undergraduate applicants can also apply via UCAS, if they wish to apply to more than one university. The International Admissions team aim to respond to any new application made directly via the online application form within 5 working days of receipt. However, this can vary during peak application periods (particularly January-March) or if the team require additional information to process your application. Applicants who apply to transfer to University College Birmingham on to a second year or final year of a course will have their previous course matched for entry. Each application is considered individually and careful consideration is given to all information on your application form. We may also need to contact you regarding your immigration status or previous studies in the UK.

Interview

The Admissions unit will use the entrance criteria, as well as your personal statement, reference and work experience information, to shortlist candidates for interview. All interviews will take place after 15 January UCAS equal consideration deadline. Successful applicants will be invited to an interview which will comprise of: - Multiple Mini Interviews (MMIs) – You will be assessed on your motivation and understanding of the role of a nurse and your familiarity with NHS Constitution and Values.

Additional fee information

UK: If you are a UK student enrolling on a Foundation Degree or a BA/BSc at University College Birmingham, your fee for this academic year will be £9,250. A half year tuition fee is £4625. This is a yearly fee, and will increase with inflation in subsequent years (in line with the government’s permitted rise). If you are an English student studying your first higher education qualification, you can apply for a tuition fee loan from the Student Loans Company. You will not start repaying this loan until you leave the course and are earning over £25,000 a year. If you live in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, you should apply to Student Finance Wales, Student Finance Northern Ireland, or SAAS.
