Course summary
The University of York is pleased to announce a new PhD programme in Interdisciplinary Global Development, which will take in its first cohort of students in September 2019. The programme is part of the University’s investment in the Interdisciplinary Global Development Centre (IGDC), an interdisciplinary centre for research, teaching and partnership. The IGDC aims to meet major development challenges through research that spans traditional disciplinary and sectoral demands. It is led by the Departments of Politics, Environment and Geography, and History and has members from the Faculties of Science, Social Science and Arts and Humanities. Students on this programme will benefit from bespoke training in interdisciplinary approaches to global development and have supervisors from two departments in order to encourage interdisciplinary approaches to major global challenges. The programme will provide training in different sets of methodologies, such as quantitative methods, including original data collection and secondary data analysis, and qualitative methods including interviews, focus groups, media analysis and archival data, that will enable students to bring wider expertise to bear on global development challenges. We value and encourage partnership with relevant external organisations, though this is not a necessary component of the programme. We encourage applications from outstanding candidates who are committed to addressing major global development challenges through interdisciplinary research. Successful applicants will join and contribute to the vibrant research community of the IGDC. We are particularly keen on supporting PhDs that fit within our research priorities (Governance, Citizenship, Sustainability, Health and Wellbeing, Financialisation and Development Alternatives) and that respect our commitment to global justice.
