This course provides an opportunity for students to develop as industry-ready computer games designers. It combines theoretical grounding in visual art and media theory with extensive hands-on games development skills. Students will design, create, code and release their own games and digital assets throughout their studies and as an integral part of their programme. Exposure to industry through incoming experts and participation in national events and fora will be a standard part of the student experience. The course will support students to understand traditional and more contemporary modes of game design, develop their visual design abilities, enhance their coding and general production standards, and help them become adept at using critical evaluative techniques to develop their own work and support their peers. The course’s design is intentionally and carefully blended between onsite and electronic teaching. The aim is to support Games Design students in particular, whose artistic practice does not always fit with “nine-to-five” ways of working. A combination of in-person teaching with synchronous and asynchronous elements of e-learning is preferred.
The course is at an undergraduate level with sessions being run two days a week. Students will be taught through a series of seminars, tutorials, group-based projects, practical experience and lectures. Assessment will include coursework, presentation and work-based learning. Feedback will be provided within UEA guidelines on all coursework submissions. Weekly feedback will be task based and tracked online or verbally recorded with access online (being transcribed when needed). Industry-engagement will be a significant aspect of the course, but will take the shape of sustained, embedded activity alongside industry rather than a dedicated module. The West Suffolk College based Games Design Studio will house and release student projects commercially, while taking students and games to current, and planned hosted, local events. East Anglia Digital Incubator (EADI) Games Year Placement – This is an incubator we are involved with setting up with the Creative Computing Club (CCC) and will take 5 teams per year, helping develop business plans and will showcase projects at nationwide events. This launched in June 2020. Others - Industry Competitions, Networking Event, Games Festivals and Game Jams such as the Global Games Jam. Industry-facing activity (or pre-work for industry-facing activity) is anticipated to total c.150 hours over the course of the programme.
All assessment will be based on course work and documentation on how students have solved problems discussing all theory, research and implementation.
