University Centre Leeds, Leeds City College has opted into the TEF and received a Bronze award.
This is a level 6 Top Up programme (final year of degree) designed in consultation with industry providing a challenging, relevant and academic programme of study. It leads to a full BSc (Hons) degree with the full range of classifications. You will develop skills and knowledge about genetic engineering, analytical chemistry and how new drugs and medical treatments are developed including those used in gene therapy. In addition, you will have the opportunity to develop your own specialist research project to produce an undergraduate thesis (dissertation). The course provides an exemplary experience of laboratory work and entry into a career in science. If you are interested in the field of science you will gain further knowledge in addition to employability skills and industry knowledge needed to succeed in your career. Biotechnical Sciences encompasses a wide range of laboratory procedures for working with living organisms for human purposes. It includes research and development in the laboratory exploring, extracting, exploiting and producing high value-added products from living organisms. Examples include the use of organisms for the manufacture of drugs, and food products. Biotechnology is also used to recycle, clean-up sites contaminated by industrial activities (bioremediation), and to produce biological weapons. The programme offers informed teaching in small groups by highly qualified and experienced teachers in addition to excellent support. The programme has been developed with direct input from local employers who also have a global presence and represents an excellent opportunity for those interested in working in science and to those who already work in the science industry who wish to develop their careers by gaining a fit for purpose qualification whilst still working or honouring other commitments. The course provides a strong foundation in specialist areas of biology and chemistry with emphasis on current areas of importance to a broad range of employers and research interests.

A combination of exams, assessed practical laboratory work and lab reports, coursework such as presentations and essays, group projects and a dissertation

A foundation degree in Biomedical Sciences or in another relevant subject or any other programme of level 4 and level 5 modules that match those delivered in the first and second year of the Leeds City College FD in Biomedical Sciences (Chemical & Pharmaceutical Sciences).
