Course summary

The BA (Hons) in Special Effects Make-up Artistry programme has been designed to develop the student’s ability to autonomously advance the creative skills required of a reflective, artistic practitioner within a range of make-up artistry contexts. Upon completion of the course the students are able to pursue their careers in multi-disciplinary areas of the industry or progress onto further study. The modules have designed to provide students with the opportunity to independently critically appraise and manage their own practice and expectations, within the broader creative industries and wider cultural landscape in sustaining career progression beyond graduation. Within an academic context students will advance their ability to consolidate arguments and develop abstract concepts, enable the student to integrate theory into practice in the delivery of professional make-up artistry related outcomes. The programme has been designed to provide the students with the opportunity to develop a multi-faceted approach to marketing and individual creative vision which they can articulate to the wider creative community.

Modules

Examples of current modules- Major Project Major Project is designed to allow students to synthesise their experiences of the notion of make-up art, through the definition, negotiation and implementation of a self-directed course of study with investigation, research and development leading to the presentation of a major project. The primary responsibility for the implementation of the project lies with the student, who will be assessed on their capacity to undertake a detailed exploration of their creative practice. Research Project Research project provides an opportunity for the student to engage in a detailed examination of an aspect of make-up art / special effects make up art of direct personal and passionate interest. Students are encouraged to explore connections between their proposed study and their practice in a connected but distinct programme. Marketing and Promotions This unit enables the student to develop an advanced marketing and promotional strategy to publicise and promote their expertise as a make-up artist with the means to reflect their chosen career aspiration. Marketing and Promotions extends the foundations, experience and expertise to develop a meaningful marketing strategy and a range of internet based promotional activities. The module enables the student to create a relevant career development proposal, through reflecting on current marketing principles, identify their future career aspirations and develop their knowledge of the internet and social media based promotion. Advanced Materials and Processes The module is designed to provide the student with an opportunity to advance their skills within in the art of Prosthetic construction, demonstrating independence, confidence, and competence as a skilled makeup artist. Using methodologies researched and experimented with to complete final character using complex moulding methods. Advanced Character Creation Through the exploration of advanced technical methods and materials students are to identify the Inter-relationship between research, theory and practice. Experimenting with different practical industry methods and materials to create and finalise design plan. Students will fully understand how their prosthetic character will be created.

Qualification requirements

A Foundation Degree or HND in a relevant subject area. We strongly recommend that all applicants have GCSE English Language and Mathematics grades A*- C or level 9-4. Applicants who do not meet the standard entry criteria but have previous learning towards a degree-level qualification or relevant industry or life experience will be considered on an individual basis and may be invited to interview.

Interview

Students are required to attend a formal interview and provide a portfolio of work. Students will also need to provide a 2000 word example of academic written work including quotes and referencing using APA 6th (this work will be retained by the interviewer). There is availability for a remote interview for overseas/applicants who have to travel; links to e-portfolios and written work will be submitted electronically prior to the remote Interview taking place.

Additional fee information

All of the books required for the course are available from the library. However, many students choose to buy some of the core textbooks for the course and/or a laptop. Estimated costs are £300 for a laptop. Approx. £100 each year for books and printing. Students may also need to print their assignments and other documents. Campus printing costs start from 5p per page. You will need to purchase a secure digital storage device SD Card recommended 32GB estimated cost = Approx. £10 You will also need to a Universal Serial Bus USB recommended 32GB estimated cost = Approx. £10 You will also need to purchase AA batteries these will be needed to operate the triggers and flashes for studio photography work. You may need to consider extra costs of approx. £300 for additions products, tools and SFX enhancements you may want to personally include within your projects. This is up to individual’s discretion. There will be an option to undertake a basic hair cutting and barbering course, this will be outside of the contracted course timetable, It is a mandatory requirement for students to purchase a kit prior to enrolling on this course, this kit will cost approximately £200 per student.
