Course summary

Acting for Screen encompasses a range of contemporary performance disciplines, from drama for feature film and presenting for television, through to promotion and influencing on the web and through social media. This course offers the opportunity to develop the skills and attributes to excel in these areas whilst studying amongst a thriving community of diverse creatives. As a specialist arts university we have the resources and expertise to provide you with the best possible education in acting for screen. You will experience working in a film studio with access to production equipment and rehearsal space. You will also have the opportunity to work with experienced industry professionals, who will provide you with feedback and guidance on your work. Our Industry Speaker programme includes professionals from across the creative media industries to provide a real-world context for developing your career path. You will be encouraged to gain professional practice opportunities wherever possible, through working with students on our Filmmaking course or engagement with external productions. We will support you to develop networking skills and professional contacts. Working in an environment that includes filmmakers, musicians, animators, creative writers, marketeers, fine artists, and designers across a range of disciplines will provide opportunities for exciting collaborations and creative stimulation.

Modules

Year one – You will explore the processes of storytelling and the techniques of performance. Workshops in acting and performance technique will be supported by developing skills in the basic processes of filmmaking to provide the context for developing your craft with an informed perspective and purpose. Year two – Alongside developing your personal work and its context within film and screen outputs, your second year includes opportunities to consider current industry approaches through professional practice programmes. You will have the opportunity to learn from experienced industry professionals, who will provide you with feedback and guidance on your work. Year three – You will distil and extend your practical skills and experiences in the creation of a final piece for filmed performance, as well as explore opportunities to work collaboratively. You will choose and explore an element of acting theory in depth in order to gain a deeper understanding of your work. At the conclusion of the final year you will be ready to take the next steps along your career path within the screen industries.

Qualification requirements

Leeds Arts University encourages applications from talented and motivated students. The University uses a wide range of methods to assess applications, these can include: • personal statement • predicted grades • contextual information • reference • examples of your work • digital auditions or interview If you are successful in your application an offer will be made to you, if conditional we will ask for between 104 and 120 UCAS tariff points from any combination of A Levels/T Level/Extended Diploma/Foundation Diploma. The expected subjects will depend on the course you are applying for. All applicants must have GCSE English Language or Literature at Grade 4/Grade C or above, or English Functional Skills Level 2 at Pass. - Examples of work Our BA (Hons) Acting for Screen course is about working with screens in all their forms so we are keen to see how you can perform in any of these settings. We would like you to record and upload a video to YouTube, Vimeo or Weibo. The video should be made up of one or more solo performances of up to three minutes in total. The performed pieces may range from scenes from existing TV or cinema in any dramatic form or may be self-written as drama or as influence pieces designed for social media. You will need to state or caption each performance piece so that we can identify your source. - English You’ll need to have passed GCSE English Language or English Literature at Grade 4/Grade C or above, or English Functional Skills Level 2 at Pass. For mature students, an Access to Higher Education qualification in art and design will also be acceptable to demonstrate English language ability. Currently studying a Foundation Diploma in Art & Design? If you are currently studying a Foundation Diploma in Art & Design, you will have already achieved level 3 qualifications which carry UCAS tariff points. When considering your application, we will, collate your achieved tariff points with those you are predicted. You will also need a GCSE grade 4/ Grade C or above in English Language or English Literature or equivalent, or Functional Skills level 2 at a pass.
