Artificial Intelligence and Robotics (with integrated year in industry)

Course summary

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotics involves the development of artificial systems and is becoming increasingly relevant in commercial and domestic life. Examples of current and emerging artificial systems include home robots (for entertainment or assisting those with special needs), supply chain management systems, robots used in medical practice, robots in space, on land and at sea. Researchers from Aberystwyth have been active in all these areas. You will grasp the fundamentals of AI and robotics with the opportunity to jump-start your career with your integrated year in industrial and professional training. At Aberystwyth University, we endeavour to provide you with an exceptional and memorable student experience. By studying this degree, students will have access to dedicated Linux, Mac OS X laboratories and central servers as well as robotic equipment including Ardvinos, mobile robots and sailing robots. Students will have access to mobile and aerial robots, vision and motion tracking systems, microcontroller systems and laser scanners. You will be taught by lecturers who have close links with the industry and software engineering conferences. This is a fascinating and commercially important field of research. Throughout this degree, you will be introduced to programming, computer infrastructure, web development, AI, machine learning and space robotics. In your third and penultimate year, you will undertake your work placement in a real industry. This will increase your confidence and motivation for your final year. You will be assigned a personal tutor, who can help with any difficulties you might have with the degree or with university life. Studying for a degree in Computer Science with AI will equip you with a range of transferable skills, which are highly valued by employers. These include communication, research and data analysis, mathematical and computational skills, independent and team-working, organisation, implementation and self-motivation. Industrial year students have an opportunity to take part in a residential weekend which will focus on developing employability skills and helping you secure a great placement for your year in industry. These skills include CV writing, interview practice, networking with employers and developing your online presence. Another resource is GO Wales, which is administered by the University’s Career Service and works with local businesses to create paid work placements for students. It helps you gain valuable work experience, which will enhance your CV. Alongside the skills necessary for most typical jobs in the software industry, your degree will give you an advantage in fields such as data mining and optimisation. Typical careers include: software design, communications and networking, computer applications, web development, IT consultancy and management, systems analysis and development and education. In addition, you will acquire transferable skills, such as problem-solving abilities, needed for success in a wider range of careers.
