Course summary

If you want to develop a career in the sports and leisure industry, and you have a passion for sport and the ambition to work in this dynamic sector, this could be the programme for you. The FdA in Sports Management combines theory and practice so that you can learn management skills on a strategically designed two-year Foundation degree, including structured work placements embedded in the programme. Theory will be reinforced through placement experiences or simulated briefs and case studies. You will be actively encouraged to engage in a variety of working environments, to encourage a positive group dynamic and the development of a wide range of essential skills, such as organisation, independence and reflection. The programme will introduce you to professional standards, techniques and processes, which will require periods of self-evaluation and reflection. You will work individually on a variety of responses (e.g. essays, presentations, portfolios and reflections) to set projects. You will also learn to express your ideas verbally in formal presentations and group discussions. Collaborative opportunities are a feature of the course and reflect the type of team working that may be found in the professional sector. You will be encouraged, where possible, to consider innovative contexts for your work and to engage in professional development. Shared modules enrich the student experience by allowing cross-curricular collaboration with our new FdA Sports Media programme to create a dynamic and engaging classroom environment. You will gain knowledge and understanding of the importance of sport and leisure for health and wellbeing whilst also developing an awareness of the management practices and procedures that govern business. Your academic work – which will include understanding the sports and leisure industries, marketing and media, PR, ethics and resource management - will be underpinned by your developing professionalism and employability. There is a rich array of practical and lecturing experience within the programme team, ranging from practical sporting and business excellence to effective pedagogic delivery methods. Employability and professional practice underpin delivery of this programme, making sure that you will be supported with both academic content and wider transferable skills. You will be based at our new University Centre on the WISE campus in Bristol, which has superb, professional standard sports facilities, including three standard football pitches, two 4G outdoor pitches, an artificial football/rugby pitch, twelve 5-a-side pitches, a 40-station gym, weights room, Sports Science Lab and Performance Lab, an American Football Gridiron, fully licensed sports bar, sports hall and physios. If you love playing sport, you could continue to play at an elite level whilst studying.
