Course summary

This one year Certificate of Higher Education will attract applicants wishing to seek employment in the areas of business management, accounting and finance. It will equip graduates with the subject-specific skills and knowledge in both business management and accounting that will also underpin progression to professional qualifications, should the graduate wish to take this route. It will also equip graduates with the skills and knowledge to enter into a career within business management. The course is set to offer a coherent coverage of the main areas in itself: • Business Management is concerned the with how organisations are formed and managed within a range of sectors, including initial funding, growth and cultures. • Accounting is concerned with the provision of financial information for a variety of business purposes, including decision making, planning and controlling activities, performance measurement and external reporting. • Finance is concerned with financial decision-making, asset pricing, risk management and the organisation and behaviour of financial markets. The curriculum will be delivered in a modular approach, but with all learning coming together to form a coherent study scheme at each level. Students will also be supported in recognising the connections between modules and the progressive nature as they move through various levels. Level 4 Subject Specific Modules Management and Organisations (25 credits) This module introduces management and organisations as a topic for study. The operations and processes associated with management of, and within, organisations are explored along with key theoretical frameworks which have been used to shape present custom and practice. Areas such as theories and approaches to management, management information and decision making, management and business ethics, governance and oversight and organisations in relation to operation, control and management. Economics for Business (25 credits) The main components of the module are the role of business organisations in the market economy, and the study of the influence of the micro-economic environment on business organisations’ decision-making. An examination of the rationale for government intervention in the market economy provides a link to the second half of the module. The module also looks at the influence of the macroeconomic and global environment on business organisations, operation of the macro-economy, policies to deal with inflation, unemployment and balance of payments. Introduction to Financial Accounting (25 credits) This module provides an introduction to the principals of, and connection between, finance and accounting with explorations of the financial approaches taken by businesses and techniques and approaches for financial analysis. In addition, the module will examine the methods and approaches widely used by accountants in the operation of normal business practice. Introduction to Management Accounting (25 credits) This module introduces the production and use of management accounting information for management purposes. Topics include of cost-volume profit analysis, direct and indirect costs, and costing methods. The role of budgets in managerial decision-making, and their impact upon organisational behaviours and performance will be covered.
