Course summary
BTEC Higher Nationals are designed to provide an engaging specialist vocational programme with a strong work-related emphasis, linked to the requirements of the professional bodies and National Occupational standards. The HND is available on a full or part-time basis. We also offer a top up from HNC to HND. You may take up employment in a wide range of industrial situations. The United Kingdom Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC) will explain how Higher National qualifications fit into this framework.
Modules
HND Engineering (Mechanical Engineering) comprises the following units. Stage One: Engineering Design; Engineering Maths; Engineering Science; Managing a Professional Engineering Project; Mechanical Principles; Fundamentals of Thermodynamics and Heat Engines; Mechanical Workshop Practices; Computer Aided Design and Manufacture (CAD/CAM). Part-time students will all be recruited from industry and consequently will already have the necessary experience developed by Mechanical Workshop Practices. The part-time structure therefore replaces Mechanical Workshop Practices with Quality and Process Improvement, which better meets the needs of employers. Stage Two: Research Project; Professional Engineering Management; Advanced Mechanical Principles; Virtual Engineering; Further Mathematics ; Advanced Manufacturing Technology ; Thermofluids. Part-time students and employers have requested the inclusion of Lean Manufacturing in the part-time programme structure (in place of Thermofluids). The Engineering team feels that Thermofluids is more appropriate for the full-time programme as it builds on aspects of Fundamentals of Thermodynamics and Heat Engines. It will also provide full-time students with a broader range of expertise to support their entry into employment in the Mechanical Engineering sector.
Assessment method
In addition to technical subjects, we will develop and assess your personal and inter-personal skills throughout the course to map your progress. You will follow a balanced programme of lectures, laboratory and workshop practical work, directed private study and industrial visits. Continuous assessment of your performance will be carried out by means of assignments, homework, class and laboratory work and formal examinations. All formal grades are subject to external verification.
