Course summary
We recognise that many Art students want to specialise from the outset of their degree, focusing the development of skills in one clear discipline area. Our programme is built around the key areas of drawing and painting. Each of these disciplines are supported by technical workshop provision to enable you to achieve the highest quality art production. This new degree allows you to commit to this discipline area and explore the area observational and experimental work. Through this journey we will encourage you to develop an intellectual curiosity, and a sense of adventure, with an ability to deal with the unpredictable. In the first year students will initially be set a series of research and drawing based activities that will drive the students’ ideas towards a self-directed practice, greater independence, and by the final year, the attainment of a distinctive vision. Lectures and seminars along with the peer group critique in the studio, support independent, self-directed work. Students will learn to create their own negotiated pattern of work as they move towards an exhibition for their degree show in their final year. We offer you the opportunity to exhibit your work outside of the artOne building. A series of selected work is hung in the general public spaces and provides a professional showcase for your work. As well as these public spaces there is the opportunity to show work in the University’s Otter Gallery.

Interview
We are inclusive and welcoming. We interview people from various types of course, young and mature. We judge you on your folder, not your background. Interviews are friendly and non-intimidating. If you are invited for interview you will always be given the chance to show us your portfolio, face to face. We want to chat to you about your work in a relaxed manner, so be prepared to talk about the development of your ideas and the key Artists who’ve inspired you. More detailed portfolio advice is available on each ‘course’ page on the UoC Fine Art website.

English language requirements
Test | Grade | Additional details |
---|---|---|
IELTS (Academic) | 5.5 | |
PTE Academic | 43 |
If you are an international student and English is not your first language, you can begin your 3-year degree programme with IELTS 5.5. Our International Route allows you to take 4 credit-bearing modules in International English Studies (IES) as part of your first year studies. This means you study 4 modules in your chosen subject and 4 in International English. The IES Modules allow you to focus on personal language development and your use of English as an academic language. Then, at the end of your first year, you’ll have all the necessary language skills to transfer to full study of your main subject. If you have an IELTS score under 5.5 you can still begin a 3-year degree programme with us. In this case we provide a 5 or 10 week intensive Presessional Programme in English language and academic skills. For the 10 week Programme you’ll need IELTS 4.5, and IELTS 5.0 for the 5 week Programme.

The student satisfaction data is from students surveyed during the Covid-19 pandemic. The number of student respondents and response rates can be important in interpreting the data – it is important to note your experience may be different from theirs. This data will be based on the subject area rather than the specific course. Read more about this data on the Discover Uni website.
