Course summary

This interdisciplinary masters studies the relationship between humans and computers. Many global industries are investing in human-computer-interaction to improve their products and services, such as voice-assisted-devices and virtual reality. You will develop your skills and expertise in this field. This will prepare you for a range of high-level careers in industry or research. You will study core modules in the fields of mixed reality and user experience (UX) design. This course is taught by both the School of Computer Science and the Department of Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering. Our teaching staff use their own active research to ensure you are being taught the latest developments in the field. You will complete a major research project in an area of human-computer-interaction. You will have the opportunity to do your research project in collaboration with an industry partner or with one of our research groups: the Mixed Reality Laboratory and Human Factors lab. To help support our students, we offer an Excellence in Computer Science scholarship. There are three levels to the award which range from 10-50% off your tuition fees.

Modules

Modules are taught by specialists and members of the Mixed Reality Laboratory and Human Factors Research Group, both of which are specialists in human computer interaction research. You will study core modules in the fields of mixed reality and user experience (UX) design. If you do not have a strong back in computer science you will also study a core module in programming. If you do have a strong background in programming, then you will study a core module in cognitive ergonomics and design. All students will have a range of optional modules to choose from. This will allow you study areas of computer science and HCI that you are personally interested in. You will largely work and study in lecture theatres, seminar rooms, and laboratories.

Assessment method

Assessment methods include an individual research project.


Entry requirements

2.1 (or international equivalent) in a computer science, engineering, natural sciences, social sciences or art and design subject. English language requirements: IELTS 6.5 (no less than 6.0 in any element).
