Course summary

This exciting degree will give you a deep insight into how the human mind works and affects behaviour, and an in-depth understanding of how psychology can be applied to the study of criminal behaviour and the criminal justice system. Taught be expert teachers, and with access to excellent facilities, you will learn about yourself and others by studying how the human mind works and how it affects behaviour. You will explore people’s motivations behind criminal behaviour and modern methods for counteracting crime in society. You will study a full spectrum of topics within psychology, learning to think and write like a psychologist and work alongside criminologists to study crime, the criminal justice system and society's response to the impact of criminal behaviour. You’ll develop an understanding of how the brain and nervous system affect and are affected by behaviour, how we perceive information, communicate, learn and think, as well as a critical understanding of how the criminal justice system operates and the relationship between punishments and crime prevention. You will be taught by enthusiastic and dedicated tutors, who are also practitioners and involved in the latest research. You will also benefit from our world-class library, state of the art teaching facilities and dedicated psychology facilities, including electroencephalograms (EEGs) which are used to evaluate electrical activity in the brain and eye tracking systems which allow you to gain a deeper understanding of cognitive processes during tasks, which will help support your studies and research. Our BSc Psychology and Criminology is professionally accredited by The British Psychological Society (BPS). If you graduate with at least a second-class honours degree, you’ll be eligible for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) of the BPS – a key first step if you choose to become a Chartered Psychologist. Taught on our south-west London campus, on this degree you will have access to many opportunities for work experience through our Careers Team, and access to face-to-face and 24/7 online careers support, whether you choose to live on campus or commute to us. This course offers all students the option of a one-year paid work placement, to boost your employability even further. If you choose this route, you will take the placement following year two of your course, and then return to complete your degree. A placement year is the perfect opportunity to gain valuable work experience, to build on the career skills we will teach you on this degree. The connections you make on the placement will improve your career prospects further, and equip you with the skills you need to secure graduate-level employment.
