From trans-activism to pro-anorexia websites and from LGBTQ family-making to homonationalism – our postgraduate students are engaged in cutting-edge research. Areas of study On the humanities route in Gender Studies, you have the opportunity to explore cultural, social and political approaches to the field. Our expert faculty offer guidance and supervision for a wide range of research projects, including:

- digital media
- LGBT and queer studies
- gender and cultural forms.
Modules
Recent thesis titles include: Changing media, changing feminisms; the older woman’s body as a source of horror; the queer uncanny; breaking the silence – lesbian clients speaking out about their experiences of counselling; honour killings in Turkey; lone mothers and social policy in Korea.

You’re normally expected to have a Merit (an average of 60% overall) in a Masters degree and an upper second-class (2.1) undergraduate honours degree. Your qualification should be in a subject relevant to your chosen area of research. You may also be considered for the degree if you have other professional qualifications or experience of equivalent standing.

Although gender studies is not itself recognised as an ESRC outlet, students working on gender-related topics may apply for ESRC funding through the departments or schools of most supervisors; this includes access to 3 interdisciplinary Quota awards; there are financial opportunities for research students to contribute towards undergraduate teaching.
