Course summary

This course was previously offered by Writtle University College prior to the merger with ARU in March 2024. This course will run on the ARU Writtle campus. Gain the skills to teach or coach people – and have a lasting impact on their physical and mental wellbeing – with our BSc (Hons) Health and Physical Literacy at ARU Writtle. If you’re interested in teaching, sports coaching or health coaching, this is the course for you. It focuses on physical literacy, which encourages lifelong health and wellbeing through physical activity. As a student at ARU Writtle you’ll gain practical experience through work placements, and an appreciation of the holistic development of children and adolescents. The built-in work-based learning modules, and additional vocational qualifications (UKSCA and Parkour Generations), are all designed to increase your employability when you graduate.

Modules

Year 1: Introduction to Human Physiological Systems, Professional Skills in Sport, Health and Wellbeing, The Practice of Coaching, Introduction to Psychology, Nutrition for Health, Analysis of Human Movement and Performance, Introduction to Physical Literacy, Individual Differences in Health, Sport and Exercise. Year 2: Research Skills in Sport, Health and Wellbeing, Strength and Conditioning Coaching, Developing Innovative and Inclusive Practice, Work Placement, Enhancing Physical Capabilities through Physical Literacy, Nutrition for Sport and Exercise, The New Psychology of Health, Coaching and Leadership, The New Psychology of Sport and Exercise: A Social Identity Approach. Year 3: Capstone Project, Applied Coaching Science, Pedagogical Approaches to Physical Literacy, Philosophy of Physical Literacy, Teaching of Games for Sport and Physical Literacy, Work Placement.

Assessment method

Students are assessed in a number of ways including practical assessments – both in small groups and individually, practical portfolios, presentations, reflective logbooks, case studies, critiques of literature, written assessments, examinations – both multiple choice and essay questions, reports, peer and tutor observations, and a dissertation (Capstone Project).

GCSEs All applicants must hold a minimum of four GCSE passes at grade C/4 or above to include English, Maths and Science.
