Course summary

(Subject to Approval) This unique, industry-driven foundation degree has been designed to prepare you for employment within the marine sector; ashore or on the water. A range of modules will develop your understanding of the scale and scope of the industry, as well as the legislation that governs business and professionals within it. This is a fast developing industry and your studies will also look at innovation in the field and the future of the industry. You will develop a broad range of transferable skills, enabling you to pursue opportunities in a variety of careers within the maritime sector. This course is delivered primarily at South Devon Marine Academy, our brand new purpose-built facility based in Kingswear on the River Dart. Situated within a working marina, with a range of marine businesses on site, this facility provides a fantastic learning environment. You will also have the opportunity to apply the skills and theory you learn through practical delivery on the water' using our own fleet of vessels.

Course details


For full time students a total of 120 credits will be studied in each academic year. In the majority of cases this will consist of 6 modules. For part time students it will depend on the intensity of studies. This course is currently in development. Full module details will be made available prior to the commencement of your studies, but the details below will give you an idea of the modules you will study during your course. Year 1 modules: Academic and Research Skills; Maritime Industry; Nautical Safety and Risk Management; Seamanship Skills; Vessel Construction and Maintenance. Year 2 modules: Research and Statistics; Navigation Processes and Innovation; Environmental Impact and Responsibilities; Maritime Law; Work-based Learning.
