Course summary

The BSc (Hons) Children's Nursing prepares students for a fulfilling and rewarding career caring for children and young people and their families. It leads to eligibility to apply for professional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). Students develop skills and interests in both general medicine and specialist areas to be a confident and compassionate child nurse. City students benefit from clinical placements at London’s leading hospitals and trusts, with placements in a range of settings allowing students to experience the many different environments and specialisms’ children’s nurses’ work in. This course is taught through a combination of classroom theory, simulated practice and practice placements. City is home to state of the art clinical facilities including our specialist Clinical Skills Centre, a facility designed especially for students to clinical practice skills in a safe environment, before commencing placements. Career prospects are excellent for our Children's Nursing graduates - many secure employment within local London trusts and throughout the rest of the UK.

Modules

  • Year one
In the first year the focus is on discussing underlying foundation concepts and principles associated with nursing practice and learning to apply these to children’s nursing. Students are taught through simulated practice within clinical skills facilities and they undertake practice placements.
  • Year two
In the second year, students build upon their previous knowledge and experience and develop an ability to deliver person-centred care in different contexts. Students develop skills of enquiry in relation to children’s nursing and practice and develop a variety of approaches to problem-solving as well as being able to identify the limitations of their knowledge.
  • Year three
In the final year, students further develop advanced knowledge and skills for professional practice in children’s nursing. Students are also prepared for registration so that they can influence, manage and lead care delivery. Students undertake a dissertation and gain further experience through clinical placements.

Assessment method

Students are assessed using a variety of methods, depending on module choices:

  • Practice Assessment Document (PAD): used to demonstrate achievement of practice competencies and also to record the number of hours of practice experience
  • Written assignments, including essays: these may take the form of care studies or support another assessment such as a poster presentation
  • Written examinations
  • Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCEs): practical skills assessments
