OVERVIEW Demand for construction workers is booming. The UK industry is expected to need hundreds of thousands of skilled people in this field in the coming years to help deliver multi-billion-pound regeneration and home-building projects around the country. Our Higher National Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment will equip you with advanced knowledge to make an immediate impact in this essential industry. Providing you with both an understanding of the breadth and depth of the sector as well as global transferable skills, our two-year course is ideal for anyone seeking to develop a career in construction, including those with a suitable academic background but little construction knowledge. Supported by our brand new construction facilities on campus, you will explore a range of core themes for the sector, from the fundamentals of technology, science and materials to construction drawing, contracts, project management, tendering and procurement. By completing our construction HND course, you will earn a widely recognised Level 5 qualification and be able to pursue a variety of relevant careers, from architectural and engineering roles to planning and surveying. Guest lecturers from industry will also support in the delivery of modules and specialist topics. Assessment occurs through a combination of assignments and activities, with a focus on the holistic development of practical, interpersonal and higher-level skills. Many modules will require a practical demonstration of skills, while others will require you to carry out your own research and analysis, working independently or as part of a team. In many cases, assignments will be set against a real-world scenario by employers, and you will gain experience of presenting your ideas, results and solutions to employer panels. Our teaching and assessment is underpinned by our Teaching, Learning and Assessment Strategy 2021-2024.

Non-tariff: Non-UCAS Tariff based Level 3 qualifications are also considered for entry please contact [email protected] to check your eligibility. Work-based: We also give equal consideration to applicants who are currently in work and wish to apply to UCB. To apply, you must have a minimum of 3 years’ relevant work experience, demonstrating management or supervisory duties. Your application must also include a reference from your line manager supporting your entry to higher education. For further details please contact Admissions. Students who are studying a mixture of qualifications will receive an offer that will be inclusive of all Level 3 qualifications.

Additional fee information
UK:
If you are a UK student enrolling on a Foundation Degree or a BA/BSc at University College Birmingham in 2021/22, your fee for this academic year will be £9,250. A half year tuition fee is £4625.
This is a yearly fee, and will increase with inflation in subsequent years (in line with the government’s permitted rise).
If you are an English student studying your first higher education qualification, you can apply for a tuition fee loan from the Student Loans Company. You will not start repaying this loan until you leave the course and are earning over £25,000 a year.
If you live in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, you should apply to Student Finance Wales, Student Finance Northern Ireland, or SAAS. The loans and grants available to you will differ from those available from Student Finance England.
UCB does not charge for 24 or 48 week placements.
