Course summary

MA Education is a flexible programme for those who want to extend their knowledge and understanding of current educational practices, contemporary matters of debate in the educational world and key issues related to educational practice. The emphasis throughout the MA programme is on developing your independent critical thinking and problem solving. Using an inquiry-based approach, the programme is designed to give you scope to examine in detail topics that are of particular interest to you. MA Education can be studied over one year full-time, or two years part-time. It helps teachers to develop the educational understanding, analytical skills and leadership qualities necessary to improve pupil development and achievement in schools. This programme provides you with the opportunity to learn more about curriculum, school management and leadership, as well as information technology and research methods. MA Education is also appropriate for international students who would like to broaden their knowledge and understanding of different aspects of educational theory and practice. We designed this programme to aid the professional development of experienced teachers within the context and atmosphere of the latest research in education. A wide range of specialist module subjects enable you to tailor the programme to your own specific needs.

Assessment method

You have the option of leaving the programme at the end of stage 1 with a Postgraduate Certificate in Education or at the end of stage 2 with a Postgraduate Diploma in Education as long as you have earned sufficient credits. Some modules are supported by visiting speakers and local school and education-related visits.


How to apply

International applicants

If you require a student visa to study or if your first language is not English you will be required to provide acceptable evidence of your English language proficiency level. This course requires academic IELTS 6.5 overall, with 5.5 in each skill. For other English language proficiency qualifications acceptable by this University, please click here. Entry requirements

A minimum of 2.2 Honours degree (or international equivalent) in a subject relevant to the field of Education is generally required. Appropriate professional experience will be taken into account. This degree is for anyone who is interested in Education in its widest sense; it will not qualify you to teach. In order to ensure our students have a rich learning and student experience, most of our programmes have a mix of domestic and international students. We reserve the right to close applications early to either group, if application volumes suggest that this blend cannot be achieved. In addition, existing undergraduate students at the University of Hull have a guaranteed ‘Fast Track’ route to any postgraduate programme, subject to meeting the entry criteria (excluding Social Work).
