Course summary
Molecular genetics underlies the majority of modern biological research. It is concerned with the molecular mechanisms by which genes are expressed and regulated and the ways in which they control the properties of cells and organisms. This area of study has been revolutionised in recent years by the availability of large DNA sequence datasets, including full genome sequences for many species. This has also facilitated the study of many human traits, including diseases that have a major genetic component but whose inheritance involves more than a single gene. Molecular genetics impacts on almost every aspect of our lives - from human genetics and health to infectious disease, what we eat and drink and how we live. Flexibility Biological Sciences explores the study of living organisms, covering everything from the interactions of animals in their environment to how genes are expressed. We offer 12 different biological sciences subject areas, including molecular genetics. Regardless of your initial application choice, you will have the opportunity to explore aspects of each of our programmes in the early years and choose to specialise in whichever one interests you.

Direct entry to second year is available; see our website for entry requirements. Please apply for only one Biological Sciences degree as we are only able to consider one application to this subject area. You will have the opportunity to switch between programmes in later years provided the required courses have been passed. For our Biological Sciences with Management programme (C1N1) you must take the compulsory business courses from year 1. Regardless of your nationality or country of residence, you must demonstrate a level of English language competency at a level that will enable you to succeed in your studies. For SQA, GCSE and IB students, unless a higher level is specified in the stated entry requirements, a pass is required in English at the following grades or higher: SQA National 5 at C; SQA Standard Grade at 3; SQA Intermediate 1 at A; SQA Intermediate 2 at C; GCSE/IGSCE at C or 4; Level 2 Certificate Grade C or IB Standard Level at 5 (English ab initio is not accepted for entry). We also accept a wider range of international qualifications and tests. English language qualifications must be no more than three and a half years old from the start date of the degree you are applying to study, unless you are using IELTS, TOEFL, or Trinity ISE, in which case it must be no more than two years old.

Scottish students must apply to the Student Awards Agency Scotland (SAAS) for payment of their tuition fees.
EU On 9th July 2020 the decision was made by the Scottish Government to end free university tuition for European Union (EU) students starting in 2021-22. Funding policy for EU nationals and associated groups starting a course of study in academic year 2022-23 or later will be in line with international fees.
Full time international and EU students will pay a fixed annual fee rate for the duration of their programme.
