Course summary
The FdSc Law with Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University Centre Truro and Penwith provides an exciting opportunity for you to study degree-level law in Cornwall and has several distinctive features. These include excellent links with the University of Plymouth and a teaching team that includes both legal professionals and academics. The inclusion of criminal justice modules adds another dimension to the course, and this inter-disciplinary approach provides context and a deeper understanding of the subject. The inclusion of criminology and criminal justice modules helps to increase the value of the foundation degree, and the importance of staying local is highlighted by one of our graduates, Rosie, who has qualified as a solicitor. “I originally applied for courses in Plymouth, Bristol and Exeter and got accepted for all three but decided they were still too far away from Cornwall. I really enjoyed my course. I was welcomed to the University Centre and you could always go and sit in the library and use the computers or hire out a study pod for individual study. My tutor was always available… which was really reassuring. I interviewed with a few different companies and every time they were quite interested in the fact that I’d chosen to stay down in Cornwall. I think it showed I was committed to the area and wasn’t just looking for a job anywhere.” This programme has been designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge base required to work in your chosen specialism or to take advantage of other graduate opportunities. It is also a platform from which you can undertake additional academic, and in some instances professional, qualifications. Past students have gained employment within a variety of fields, including law, education, youth services and policing. Some have gained exemptions from qualifications offered by the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx) or progressed to postgraduate study. Students who successfully complete the FdSc Law with Criminology and Criminal Justice may progress to one of the following courses: •LLB (Hons) Law (Year 3) at the University Centre Truro and Penwith •LLB (Hons) (Year 2) (University of Plymouth)^ •LLB (Hons) with Criminology and Criminal Justice (Year 2) (University of Plymouth) ^ •BSc (Hons) Law with Criminology and Criminal Justice (Year 3) (University of Plymouth) •BA (Hons) Human Behavioural Studies (Year 3) (University Centre Truro & Penwith) •BA (Hons) Applied Social Science (Year 3) (University Centre Truro & Penwith) ^ Please note that progression on to the LLB (Hons) is dependent on achieving an overall aggregate of 50% for the Foundation Degree.
