Current environmental challenges mean that crop science is a vital subject for now, and our future. There is a growing demand for major food crops and the production of biofuels. You'll develop your understanding of how crops grow and the management of crops within a commercial setting. We'll teach you about sustainable agriculture, plant physiology, crop science and genetics. Teaching is based at Sutton Bonington Campus which has the 450-hectare University Farm and Dairy Centre. We have glasshouses equipped with the latest 3D imaging equipment. Our controlled environment growth rooms can control conditions such as temperature, light and humidity. You'll develop your scientific knowledge and use our labs and fields to apply this in practice. Field trips to local farms help to put your learning into context through real-life examples. We have an international research reputation in plant and crop science. This means you'll be taught by experienced scientists working on the latest research. We'll explain the latest thinking through lectures, practicals and field trips. On this course you can:

- Get industry expertise from guest lectures and visits to commercial organisations
- See agricultural systems in operation
- Industry placement - you can add a year in industry between years two and three
- Study abroad - options include Australia, Canada, or Europe
- Computer Science year - use algorithms to analyse complex data and apply this to your course
In your first year you'll study sustainable systems used by commercial UK farms. Visit the University Farm and other local farms to see what you've learnt in practice. Core second-year modules cover environmental plant physiology, plant pests and diseases and agri-marketing. Work in teams to grow your own crop in our Enterprise Management Challenge. You make all the agricultural science and business decisions and observe the impact of your decisions as these are implemented on the farm. In your final year, the five-day Agronomy Field Course takes you to visit industry, farms and research organisations. Through field visits, you’ll learn about the optimisation of the quality and yield of crops. You'll learn how the genetic improvements of crop plants can help address food security. Your final year research project gives you a chance to work at one of the country's top agricultural research centres.
