This carefully designed course has been developed to provide progression for those who have completed a Level 5 qualification in Early Years Care and/or Education. Children’s experiences during their early years create the foundations of who they become. As they mature into young people, their development is shaped by their environment, education and relationships. This course equips you for a career where you can have a positive impact on children and young people (0-19) at the most important stages of their lives. Working with children and young people is also about supporting them through the multitude of transitions they make towards adulthood. Studying at Level 6 on this course allows you to specialise in those areas that capture your own professional interests, including an in-depth independent study. Insights gained through these in-depth studies will help you take on wider responsibilities in your field of practice. The course is delivered over 30 weeks as a day release over one afternoon and evening per week and an alternate evening every other week, requiring minimal release from work and there is a great deal of support for students who are new to study at this level. Lectures are three hours in duration and delivered by highly qualified staff who have excellent academic and practical backgrounds and experience in children’s and young people’s services.
The Degree consists of 4 modules and a dissertation over the year. The modules are: Independent Study (runs across the year of study); The Professional Practitioner; Leadership and Management; Social Policy: Context and Implications; Special Educational Needs and Disability.
You will learn through reflective tasks, work-based activities, presentations, tutorials and the use of online resources. There are no exams so you will be assessed using your work-based activities, creative presentations and essays. Everything you study will be relevant to your everyday work. You will also have the support of a critical friend as well as the tutors at College.
Qualified teacher status (QTS)
To work as a teacher at a state school in England or Wales, you will need to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS). This is offered on this course for the following level:

BMet do not hold a Tier 4 sponsor licence with UK Visas and Immigration, therefore, we are unable to accept international students on our courses.
You are required to hold a complete Level 5 qualification in a related subject. It is also desirable to hold a minimum of 2 GCSEs at Grade C or 4 or above including: GCSE English: Grade C or 4; GCSE Maths: Grade C or 4. The College will accept Level 2 equivalent qualifications in lieu of GCSE English and Maths.

Additional entry requirements
All applicants will be invited to an interview to discuss their qualifications, experience and any other related issues. The University of Derby are required to approve all applicants prior to an offer being made.
You must be working directly with children aged 0-19 years in a voluntary or paid capacity for at least two days per week.
