If you love a good story, whether in print or in film, indulge your passions and learn how to craft the perfect story by studying English and Film. Stories touch all our lives. They focus on the things we care about, featuring issues we can explore about important human themes, individual identity or social and political patterns of behaviour. But to make sure they strike the right note with their audience, stories have to be constructed with care. They need to be planned, crafted, funded, produced and distributed. You'll learn about the film industry and discover how to analyse, discuss and write about film. You'll study a range of modern literary texts in different genres, analysing how they work and how to compare them to great texts of the past. We'll also give you plenty of opportunities to bring the two sides of your degree together, exploring topics such as how books have been turned into films, or films into books. Practical and professional experience is at the heart of your degree. You'll have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the practical aspects of film-making such as camera, photography and lighting, or you can develop your scriptwriting skills. In each year of study, you'll have the opportunity to produce your own creative writing, either for a creative project or in response to a text. You'll also complete professional work placements, working with employers from a wide range of creative industries. Professional placements Our students have completed their placements at a variety of organisations – from film production companies and recording studios, to local newspapers and MPs' offices. If you're interested in teaching, you could also experience working in a primary or secondary school. Career opportunities You'll be well-prepared for a career in playwriting, scriptwriting, teaching, marketing, PR, copywriting, publishing and journalism. Many of our graduates also continue on to postgraduate level study.
