Course summary
If you're passionate about the human-horse relationship from an equine welfare perspective, and want to understand how horses interpret our world to enhance their wellbeing, then this is the ideal course for you. You don’t need to ride horses, you simply need a keen interest in horse behaviour, learning and welfare. During your degree, you’ll develop your understanding of contemporary ethical approaches to horse training and management based on the most up-to-date scientific research, applying theory to practice in real-world settings including our commercial equine yard that’s home to 230 horses and riders of all levels. We’ll support you to adopt an innovative and scientific mind-set, building both specialist and transferable skills to help you stand out when you graduate. Alongside developing equine-specific expertise, you’ll refine entrepreneurial and leadership skills. Work placements will enable you to build a successful career while improving the wider industry. Graduate opportunities are diverse and could include working for equine charities and welfare organisations or with individuals to improve horse-rider relationships. Graduates of this course will play a vital role in education and implementation of best practice.
Modules
Our modules are developed regularly to reflect student and industry demands, ensuring you’re well prepared to enter skilled employment on graduation. The majority of courses are comprised of both compulsory and optional modules, the latter of which you'll be able to choose from to suit your interests and career goals. Most courses also include work placement learning, to help you gain essential experience for your future. Modules include: Equitition Science, Human Behaviour and Self Development, Principles of Equine Welfare, Managing Equine Wellbeing, Introduction to Equine Nutrition, Measurements of Behaviour, Professional Placement Experience in the Equestrian Sector, Equine Performance, Equine Learning and Cognition, Dissertation, Researching Equine Behaviour. Modules are sometimes subject to change. Optional modules change each year - you can attend introductory sessions before deciding which ones to study. In addition to the above a minimum of 5 GCSE's grade A* to C, (or 9 to 4) including English Language and Mathematics are required. Some evidence of practical experience in agriculture or similar land based studies is desirable. We welcome applications from mature students (aged 21 and over) and do not necessarily require the same academic qualifications as school leaving applicants. We may interview mature applicants and those with non-traditional qualifications. If you don't meet our tariff points requirement we will still consider your application and may be able to offer you a place on an alternative programme. Each application is considered on its own merits and we will consider combinations of the above mentioned qualifications or equivalent.
