The BA (Hons) Fine Art at University Centre Colchester is a studio and workshop-based programme that will provide you with generous space and the support of practicing artists, to establish a confident and independent enquiry in contemporary fine art practice. Innovative tutoring provides an integrated approach between art practice and theory, allowing you genuine opportunities for critical thinking and creative ownership of your progress. This course is driven by independent enquiry, structured and supportive exposure, self-motivated practice and focused creative thought. Painting, printmaking and sculptural concerns are energised by drawing, lens and time based processes and imaginative use of media/materials supported by a critical theoretical framework. Delivery is through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, demonstrations, theoretical and practical investigation, studio and workshop practice, exhibitions and field trips, and self directed study. Students will also have the chance to exhibit work in a public venue; this affords valuable professional experience, excellent networking opportunities and audience interaction.
Modules
The course operates on a modular basis that provides flexibility and choice. Most modules count for 20 or 40 academic credits, with each credit taken equating to a total study time of around 10 hours, which includes scheduled teaching, independent study and assessment activity. Full-time students take modules worth 60 credits per semester, with part-time students taking proportionately fewer credits per semester. A total of 120 credits per level and 360 credits are needed for an honours degree as a whole. Overall grades for the course and degree classification are based on the marks obtained for modules taken at levels 5 and 6. Each module is worth a specified number of credits: you take a combination of compulsory and optional modules, enabling you to cover key subject knowledge while developing your own interests. The number of optional modules you can take depends on the number of core modules at a given level. Our teaching is informed by research, professional practice and industry engagement and modules change periodically to reflect developments in the discipline. Assessment method
Assessment: The course provides you with opportunities to test your understanding of the subject informally before you complete the formal assessments that count towards your final mark. Each module normally contains at least one piece of practice or ‘formative’ assessment for which you receive feedback from your tutor. Practice assessments are developmental and any grades you receive for them do not count towards your module mark. There is a formal or ‘summative’ assessment at the end of each module. Assessment methods include written examinations and a range of coursework assessments such as essays, reports, portfolios, performance, presentations and your final year major project. The grades from formal assessments count towards your module mark. Feedback: You will receive feedback on all practice assessments and on formal assessments undertaken by coursework. Feedback is intended to help you learn and you are encouraged to discuss it with your module tutor.

What will I need to pay for?
A range of materials are kept in stock in all workshop areas, including, Fashion and Textiles; Photography; Printmaking; Wood, Metal and Plastics; Ceramics and Glass, and Mac Computer Suites.
Where there are timetabled, taught workshop sessions, materials that are specifically required for those sessions will be provided free of charge. However, when you wish to develop ideas or outcomes further in timetabled studio days or independent study time, you may well need to pay for the materials that you use, particularly if they are relatively expensive, or something we do not keep in stock or when you need to use a particularly large amount of something. Materials purchased from stock held by the various workshops are available to you at cost price, but we do not pay for the cost of any material requirements they do not hold.
What other costs do I need to consider?
We do hold a range of equipment that can be borrowed, from cameras to manikins and so on, but depending on the subject you are studying you may need to consider purchasing some specialist equipment, and individual courses will provide you with guidance in this respect.
In addition there may also be costs related to educational trips that are relevant to course delivery (locally, further afield or abroad) and for internal and external exhibitions of your work, such as Degree Shows, New Designers, Free Range and D&AD. However, your course tutors will work with you and advise you on fund raising strategies to help support the cost of participating in these important professional development activities.
