Course summary

Who is this programme aimed at? This three year, full-time (540 credits) programme is aimed at nationally- and internationally-based general dental practitioners who are seeking to become specialist practitioners within the discipline of endodontology. How will I be taught? The programme will take the form of lectures and seminars along with a component of supervised clinical work. MEndo exit exam Upon completion of three years of full-time training, you will be eligible to sit the specialist exit exam (MEndo) in the relevant discipline at the Royal College of Surgeons. The successful sitting of this exam is an integral component for the General Dental Council (GDC) registration process. A successful exam result is necessary to be entered on to the specialist list within the discipline by the GDC. Accreditation As per the European Society of Endodontology’s 2010 document outlining standards for accreditation in specialty training in endodontics in a European setting: "Endodontics represents a developing clinical discipline embracing scholarly academic activities in microbiology, oral biology, pathology, epidemiology, radiology, biomaterials science, and prevention and management of pulp and periapical disease as well as the emerging fields of tissue engineering and molecular and genetic investigation." More specifically, the clinical discipline is made distinct by its unique multi-skill dependent nature that relies heavily on tactile skill development. The flourishing need for expertise in both clinical and academic components will need to be met through a coordinated effort in development of basic educational programmes at undergraduate level and more sophisticated, but complementary, programmes at postgraduate levels. This includes basic and translational clinical research to develop more effective and efficient methods of management of the diseases involved. These processes should integrate with effective clinical service provision to serve the community.
