You will develop your own route through the MA in the areas that interest you most. You'll be able to combine traditional areas such as ethics and metaphysics with emerging ideas, such as applied, environmental, and social philosophy. Working with our research active academics on a range of taught modules you'll also produce a dissertation. This is an in-depth piece of original work developed with strong support and guidance from a member of staff. Department strengths These include:

You are also invited contribute to positive social change with our Centre for Social Philosophy and the Political Epistemology Network. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to take a range of lectures from the undergraduate programme.

Modules

Your Masters is made up of 180 credits. You will take 5 x 20 credit philosophy modules through which you will explore a wide range of theoretical and applied issues from ancient history to contemporary life. You will also choose one of our two faculty-wide interdisciplinary modules. Your course culminates in a 60-credit 12,000-word dissertation. You will agree on your topic with your supervisor and the Director of Postgraduate Studies. Your dissertation is usually completed during the summer.

Assessment method

Assessment methods include essays and the dissertation. We use a variety of teaching styles. These are mainly focused around seminars and small-group discussions, usually involving student presentation and peer-to-peer feedback.

Entry requirements

2.1 (or international equivalent) in philosophy or a related subject. IELTS 7.0 (no less than 6.0 in any element). For informal queries about non-standard qualifications contact the postgraduate admissions tutor Dr Michael Hannon.
