This course is designed for those who want to gain direct chemistry research experience and who are considering a career as a research chemist in industry or academia. The variety of coursework items embedded within the course allow for the development of chemistry and transferable skills, giving our graduates excellent prospects. The chemistry course at Keele consistently attracts excellent student feedback and provides an innovative curriculum and high quality teaching. This is a four year course in which you’ll have the opportunity to focus on topics which suit your interests and aspirations and develop your chemical knowledge and laboratory skills. You’ll also develop a range of important transferable skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, communication skills, and the ability to conduct cutting-edge research. In years one and two, practical chemistry is taught in our modern teaching laboratories with industry standard equipment. In the third year, you will carry out a research project to develop your research skills as well as several taught modules, including a synoptic module to consolidate your chemistry knowledge. Fourth year lectures and seminars cover research focused material, and you’ll undertake a major research project in your chosen area of chemistry, working in the research laboratories and using state of the art instrumentation. With a master’s degree, your knowledge and skills will be very appealing to employers and academics as a trained researcher. You may have developed a specific interest in an area of chemistry such as fuel cell technology, catalysis, sugar chemistry or organic synthesis which you’d like to explore at PhD level, and over 50% of our MChem cohort move on to a research degree. If you choose to go straight into employment, you might work in the chemical, pharmaceutical or environmental industries as a research scientist, analytical chemist or in other roles where scientific knowledge and related skills are in demand, such as scientific instrument sales, patent law or environmental analysis.
